what happened to success via merit?
in some instances hiring practices based on race or background are epidemiologically benign; however, in other professions, the decision to hire a minority on the sole basis of being a minority can easily translate into the difference between saving a life and destroying one.
if my wife is giving birth to a premature baby the last thing i want to see is a pakistani, racial quota, "eh it was just plagiarism" doctor waiting with a catcher's mitt while the umbilical cord wraps around my child's neck and cerebral palsy makes itself at home.
i want a doctor who studied so thoroughly that the brachial plexus is brach's candy.
if im trapped in a blazing oil well with baby jessica i dont want the clueless assistance of some hackjob fireman who was hired simply because he received an extra ten points on his written exam for having dark skin. thats absolutely outrageous.
i want the strongest, smartest, sharpest, most qualified firefighter the applicant pool had to offer.
i want this to occur in every state in every county in every city in every neighborhood in every instance.

furthermore, i want promotions solely based upon demonstrated records of achievement with no regard whatsoever to race, color, gender, creed, religion, sexual orientation, affiliation, country of origin or what instrument they mangled in their high school's marching band.

Your euphimism of the doctor is on target.
I worked in a hospital that was an Indian/Pakistani magnet or the mentally incontinent physician. I don't know why, but this place was Plymouth Rock for these guys as they got off the boat.
One Indian was so bad, we called him 007...because he had a license to kill. Literally...and did.
We'll be able to stop apologizing for the sins of our forefathers the day someone comes up with a racial slur for white people, that has an equivalent impact to the (and I hate this euphemism) "N word"...
Sadly, this may be the only way to draw equal ground. Success based on merit died years before either of us were born. Feeling guilty for other people's mistakes should have died years before that.
I just heard that a moderately-sized group of German protestants and Polish Jews came together to create concentration camp tours and museums across Austria. I doubt they wasted much time during business planning saying "I'm sorry"
Let's come up with a foul word for white people. Try it out. See if it lasts. Then maybe...just maybe...we can start living as equals. Wishful thinking, for sure. But does anyone else have a better idea to keep everyone happy?

the terms "race" and "minority" are misnomers. every human on earth falls under the genus "homo" and species "sapiens." barring genetic disorders we are all fundamentally and physiologically very similar. we ascribe the term race for a variety of reasons many of which tend to carry and perpetuate negative connotations.
differences in color and physical characteristics are the product of millions of years of evolution in which the environment selectively eliminated those who were less able to cope with conditions.
every human's organs, tissues, vascular networks and internal circuitry all appear the same. race is a social construct; being human is a genetic construct.
ive always wondered why black people seem to find a sense of morbid camaraderie in calling each other niggers.
i find it even more interesting in that this seems to occur almost exclusively amongst relatively young black people who had no intimate connection to the civil rights movement.
i also think its interesting that its alright for black comedians to mercilessly bash white people while white comics are extremely limited in the language they can use in social parodies directed at blacks.
i dont believe in reparations simply because i dont believe in perpetuating nonsense.
thats the bottom line.
